Blessed

from New Stuff by Paul Gioia

about

After tackling the text Humbled Poor is based on, I thought - what the heck, let's tackle another sacred cow - the beatitudes. All that stuff about the poor inheriting the earth, turning the cheek and walking the extra mile. The hardest part of that text is about how we treat our enemies. The path Jesus advocated runs counter to the prevailing winds of revenge and anger. This is the third way, between war and pacifism. Forgiveness is harder than war, harder than anything. It is totally impractical, but it is the only way.

lyrics

Luke 6:20-35

1.
Blessed are the humbled poor
For you shall have a place
Where the Kingdom lives within
And justice has a face

Chorus:
Don’t hate your enemies
Let your love shine on and on and
Bless the ones who bring you down
Sing a mercy song

2
Blessed are the hungry
You shall be satisfied
One day your tears shall turn to joy
Grief shall be set aside

3
Pity those who live like kings
Who live without a care
Who feast all day on everything
Whose hearts are in despair
