Prince of Peace

from New Stuff by Paul Gioia

about

Just when you think things can't get any worse they often do. In the context of the awful suffering inflicted on innocent people by the Palestinian / Israeli conflict, or the US vendetta on Iraq for the sufferings it endured at 9/11, there is no time like now for peace, for forgiveness, for turning the cheek, for loving one's enemies. This ain't pacifism, it's downright, in-yer-face peacemaking. It's also a complete coincidence that the song was finished at Christmas time when we tend to coin the phrase Prince of Peace amongst the mush and Jesus baby commercials we have to endure. I live in hope for the true Prince of Peace.

lyrics

1.
This is the moment
This is the time to pause
This is the time to understand and think of peace

2.
Who can we turn to?
Who can we ask to put things right?
Is there someone above the fray?
A Prince of Peace?

Chorus:
Someone speak of the Kingdom
And not the warfare State
Someone talk of forgiveness
And not this tribal hate
This flesh that bleeds
These bones, these bones that break
This heart, this heart that cries
There is a Prince of Peace

3.
Lay down your weapons
Lay down these eons of distrust
Lay down revenge that never ends
Please make this peace

4.
In the name of the Father
In the name of the Son who bore our shame
In the name of the Spirit
Let there be peace
